Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova’s interview was a fantastic opportunity offered to the Bucks Heroes Project to capture the story of two young people who are based very locally to the Museum. We wanted to share their story through the project to inspire other young people across Buckinghamshire. In the interview we find out the importance of sisters, family, friendship and in the area of gymnastics coaching support is often key to overcoming personal challenges especially those that occurred for many young people due to the COVID19 pandemic.

The Bucks Heroes Project have collaborated with Building Futures to develop the stories the Project was collecting, through the media of film. Those who applied for the course were all from the Building Futures programme and were interested in exploring how film making can be both enjoyable, but also a potential career path. Those on the course had very limited experience of working with film but with the expertise of Fernando Productions a wide skill-set was taught in a very short time. During the eight week course the participants learnt to use cameras, record sound and interview people. All of the filming was edited by Lawrence Fernando and developed into an intro film about the project followed by four interviews from ‘Bucks Heroes’.

What is the Bucks Heroes project?
Bucks Heroes is a countywide project delivered from Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury. We collaborate with local communities to celebrate and explore their extraordinary stories and heritage. The project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund is looking to identify and tell over 100 new hidden stories from five key local communities. The stories we want to tell are about overcoming a challenging situation, maintaining positivity through difficulty and stepping in to help someone when needed. Overcoming is a wide subject and tells many of the hidden stories of our local community groups. With some communities we offer them extra time at the Museum to support them through artists or workshops. We have a great team of volunteers who are supporting the project to record local stories.

What is the Building Futures programme?
Helping adults and young people across Buckinghamshire break through the barriers to education and employment, whatever their circumstances.
Who it’s for?
The project has a particular focus on:
• People who are economically inactive and have been unable to work due to sickness, caring responsibilities, etc.
• People aged over 50 who are long-term unemployed or have been made redundant.
• People with learning difficulties, disabilities or long-term physical or mental health issues.
• Disengaged NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) young people and those at risk of becoming NEET, aged 15-25.
• Black minority and minority ethnic community.
