Discover Bucks Museum (formerly Bucks County Museum) is delighted to have been awarded £223,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund for our new Bucks Heroes Project working with different communities in Bucks to highlight how ordinary people have done, and continue to do, extraordinary things. Alongside the Museum’s new capital project creating 5 brand new galleries telling the story of Bucks, the Bucks Heroes Project focusses on the Discover Bucks People gallery, exploring the lives of people in Bucks over the last few hundred years and up to the present day.

Sue Shave, Museum Director said “Discover Bucks Museum is very grateful for this significant investment from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible by National Lottery players, which will make a huge difference to the Museum’s engagement with different communities in Bucks and help us to tell hidden stories about local people who have never been recognised for their achievements before. We are delighted that our newly formed Community Advisory Board with very diverse membership will be involved in the project too. As part of this project we want to hear about your everyday heroes and stories from across Buckinghamshire – whether past or present, from different communities and groups – so look out for exciting opportunities to contribute your stories in person at the museum, and online.”

The project funding will support a new staff member to run the project, the creation of a new flexible learning space, purchase of some of the cases and displays in the new Discover Bucks People gallery and an interpretation programme of events and an exhibition to be co-produced with local communities. People from different backgrounds will be helping to write community labels for displays and collecting objects and stories for new displays in the future. One of the highlights will be 6 digital A1 frames on the portrait wall which will display community images to be chosen by communities in Bucks. Young people will be at the heart of this project too as IT company Omnes Interactive will be working with local college students to create a brand-new APP for young people to use in the new Discover Bucks People gallery.
