Wednesday 12 March* – Exciting Finds

The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a national scheme run through the British Museum, and the Buckinghamshire post is based at Discover Bucks Museum. The scheme records individual objects found by members of the public, and has included some of the objects in our galleries, including the Lenborough Hoard. The talk will look at how the Scheme works, give a brief overview of treasure process and focus on some highlights of the exciting finds that have been found, and that represent the people of our past.  We’ll also look at what to do when you find the pot of gold, and handle some archaeological finds.

Thursday 8 May – Why is there an Egyptian collection at Discover Bucks Museum?

Today Egyptian antiquities can be found scattered across museum collections worldwide resulting from colonial collecting practices in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Discover Bucks Museum is no exception and holds around 400 objects from ancient Egypt. This Tea & Talk explores how these objects came to be in Buckinghamshire, so far away from their original archaeological context in Egypt. Touching on themes frequently discussed in academic Egyptological research today, the talk will present ways to better understand the modern history of the ancient objects in Bucks Museum’s collection and why this matters.

This tea and talk will be delivered by Elizabeth Owen. Libby has recently finished an archaeology and heritage MA at University College London. She has been volunteering at Discover Bucks Museum since February 2024.
